The Schtick

IMPORTANT NOTE ON THE SCHTICK: from now on, the first section of the schtick will be an attempt to say something meaningful. If you enjoy my less than meaningful attempts at humor, that will occur in the second section of the schtick so just keep reading to see the part
about American Idol meets The Grateful Dead

“Not what we have But what we enjoy, constitutes our abundance.” John Petit-Senn

Sometimes it feels everything is working in your favor. You’re getting all the breaks. The right people are showing up at the right time.  You’re on a roll.

But sometimes it feels like everything is working against you. You can’t catch a break. Your resources are diminished. You’re struggling.

The yogis have an explanation. In the Southern Hemisphere, a cyclone sucks air clockwise. Winds that move in such a direction suck everything in. In the Northern Hemisphere, a hurricane blows air counter-clockwise. Winds that move in such a direction blow everything away. Depending where you are (Northern or Southern), you’d notice a change in the pattern.

In much the same way, there are subtle shifts in your attitude and perspective that can either suck in opportunity, prosperity, health, love; or blow it away from you.

Inspired by Robin Sharma, I’d like to share some of those subtle shifts you can make to move the winds in your favor. *

1. FEAR SHIFTS TO FAITH

Robin Sharma said, “For your life to be great, your faith must be bigger than your fears.” When you go to the beach and grab a clump of sand, if you squeeze too tight, the sand slips thru the gaps in your fingers. But loosening your grip, you contain the sand as you’d contain wealth, love, and happiness.

2. CONTROL SHIFTS TO CURIOSITY

Sometimes we get so caught up in a tight schedule and neat stacks and piles, that we forget to leave room for new experience, music, restaurants. As AA Milne said, “One of the advantages of being disorderly is that one is constantly making exciting discovery.”

3. SURVIVING SHIFTS TO SERVING OTHERS

“When you shift from a compulsion to survive toward a commitment to serve others, your life cannot help but explode into success.” (Robin Sharma)  Consider the basic issues with which you grapple everyday. They don’t need to be life or death issues; just the stuff that gets your goat; like paying the bills or frustration with the boss.  That rattling energy is an off-shore wind that keeps abudance and luck at bay. If that energy can be converted to helping others rather than rattling self, it’s the shift in attitude that brings the winds back in your favor.

* Note: I struggle with all of these as much as anyone.

Grateful Dead meets American Idol

In late college, The Grateful Dead was the name of the game. I’d go on long road trips braving blazing sun and freezing snow to see the band perform. So plentiful are the memories of Jerry Garcia strumming the guitar. After college, Widespread Panic caught my attention and with a pack of friends, I’d take big weekends to see the band in New Orleans, the Colorado Mountains, New Years, etc. For a period of years there was a void in my live music repetoire.   Not anymore.

9 nights last summer, I went on a journey with my buddy Bruce McElvoy to follow what I consider to be some of the great stories in music: the American Idols. In case you don’t watch the show, when the season ends, the top finalists go on a nationwide American Idol Tour. We saw live shows in Jacksonville, Greenville, Nashville, Little Rock, Houston, the list goes on. I must admit, Jordan Sparks’s bust out of “Tattoo” was epic. And as embarrassed as I am to say, when Sanjaya Malakar performed his version of “Besame Mucho” it was nothing short of fantastic. After following these kids on TV for 5 months, how could you not be excited?!

My buddy Bruce and I went to the shows as much for the party as the great tunes. Most nights, we came in costume similar to what we wore to Widespread Panic for the Halloween concerts. Bruce was the villain from the Smurfs, Mr. Gargamoyle. I dressed up as a circus clown. Despite the fact that our constant high fives caused excess sweating, this year’s run of shows was almost as good as the 2005 tour and much better than 2003.

Keep in mind, most of the crowd was 9 year old kids with their parents. It was great fun to watch Bruce’s Mr. Gargamoyle scream BOO at the little kids. He did always feel bad, however, if they cried.

There were the Top 5 things we heard from fellow fans on the Idol Tour 07.

1. “You’re sweating on me and my kids. Can you get a towel or something?”   (7/10/07) Greenville

2. “Please stop trying to give us high fives. We don’t want to high five you.” (7/15/07) Houston

3.   “Security!”

4.   “Will you please stop booing? We can’t hear them sing!”

5.  “Aren’t you my yoga teacher?” (8/17/07) Louisville

The Mountains of Vail to the Red Rocks of Zion

The yoga retreat to Vail January 10-13 was absolutely incredible. The highlights included being the first ones up the mountain to ski fresh powder, co-host Pollyanna Forster’s delicious cooking classes, and eating gourmet lunches in an exclusive cabin high on the mountain. See pics above.

Look like fun? The next adventure takes place at the Red Mountain Spa April 17-20 which is located in the stunningly beautiful territory best known for Zion National Park. The theme will be based around The Peak Experience:

Think about your perfect meal. You’re sitting at the restaurant building your appetite all day so you can savor if not devour that piping hot plate of Penne Amatriciana. There’s perfection in every bite. Does life get any better than your favorite dish at your favorite restaurant when you’re starving? It’s sometimes better than sex and as good as a great Savasana; all of which qualify as life’s PEAK EXPERIENCES.

I have a secret formula for developing more peak experiences; so you don’t have to wait for a fancy trip or an expensive meal in order to have vacation-like pleasure everyday of your life. What’s the formula? Find out and join me for a Yoga Retreat to the exotic canyons surrounding the Red Mountain Spa in St. George, Utah.  This setting is ideal for an extended weekend adventure. We will begin the day practicing yoga in an outdoor gazebo surrounded by a natural arena of towering Grand Canyonesque rock formations. Class themes will feature stories, messages, influences and flavors that set up the peak experience. Midday activities will include hikes on trails leading straight from your luxurious accommodations into the deeply soulful terrain. The meals are healthy, the sunsets are out of this world, and the evening stars create enough light to catch yourself a lunar tan.
