-A Chinese might describe it as “a shoulder or stomachache.”
-One in India might say it feels like “semen loss or a sinking heart of feeling hot.”
-A Korean might say it’s a “burning in the gut.”
-An Iranian might describe it as tightness in the chest.Either way, in the abovementioned countries, depression is not a disease so much as a symptom like a runny nose or scratchy throat.
Dr Weil explains that we can’t always be happy and sometimes we need to let ourselves to feel sad, blue, down…and allow emotion to flow through our lives without resistance.
But the one thing we can and should control is surrounding ourselves with positivity whether in the form of music, people, sunlight, art, etc.
Next time you’re feelin blue, before reaching for a pill or questioning what’s wrong with your life…relax as you would with a runny nose, put on some upbeat music as you would take Robitussin, call someone who makes you laugh as you would see a doctor, and let the blues run their course.
As Jim Morrison said, “Pain is a feeling. Your feelings are a part of you. Your own reality. If you feel ashamed of them, and hide them, you’re letting society destroy your reality. You should stand up for your right to feel pain.”
