Yoga + Wine

CAN YOU RELATE TO ANY OF THE FOLLOWING?
  • You are scared of getting old
  • You’d be the first to click on the headline: “Miraculous fountain of youth discovered south of Palermo”
  • Even though your hair is grey and your skin is a bit wrinkled, you feel as vibrant as ever!

Following in the footsteps of Yoga + Chocolate, I have teamed up with wine connoisseur and yogini Angela Gargano (www.blissflowyoga.com) and Feudo Arancio wines from Sicily to present Yoga + Wine. The aging of wine is a noble process that can serve as a model for the “healthy aging” of a human being.

The Story

In 2005, I was invited to teach Yoga + Chocolate at a intimate, beautiful studio in Madison, Wisconsin. The owner, Angela Gargano, happens to also be a sommelier. She suggested the idea of fusing yoga with wine. We fleshed out the concept and debuted the experience on a retreat to Sonoma in 2006. Our mission: to explore the character, terroir, story, climate, and passion that goes into creating a bottle of wine. When one better understands all that leads up to that first sip, a glass of wine has the potential to become one of life’s great rituals.

The Experience

Depending on whether it’s my first visit or a return trip to your stuiod, there are a series of messages all of which highlight the story and meaning of the Feudo Arancio vineyards in Sicily. Following are a few of the messages:

Fountain of Youth:

In this two hour flowing vinyasa yoga class, I explain how the yogis perceive youth not as wrinkled skin or muscle tone, but rather the vibrancy of your spirit. I’ll share how to feel, feed, and free the spirit so that when you lie there in Savasana, you’ll feel the youth available to you at any moment and any era.

“You don’t age until your regrets outnumber your dreams.” –John Barrymore

Overcoming Stress:

In this two hour flowing vinyasa yoga class, I will focus on “terroir.” The word “terroir” is commonly used by wine aficionados to describe the grapes’ oneness to the soil in which they are grown. When a human being sustains a relationship with the soil, sky, and sea, she too has a oneness with nature. Your own terroir might be evident as the dirt in your toenails from playing in the backyard; or your messy hair blown by the howling wind; or the scratch on your arm from the shrub disguising your dog’s missing tennis ball. The bottom line: dirt is good.

In a world where nature’s beauty is severely endangered by the increasingly vulnerable environment, it’s more important than ever before to venture into the wild. I will share yoga’s ability to root you into the earth, into your muscles, joints, body, and soul. After class, I will lead you through a tasting of wines known for their terroir which varies from Australia to France, and Sonoma to South Africa.

“Stress is basically a disconnection from the earth, a forgetting of the breath. Stress is an ignorant state. It believes that everything is an emergency. Nothing is that important. Just lie down.” –Natalie Goldberg
